Wheat exports have been off to a strong start this year, with volumes moving swiftly through the first 12 weeks of the marketing period. Globally competitive prices for high-protein wheat have contributed to this quick pace, and as shown in the chart below, export activity is outpacing the previous five-year highs and has even exceeded last year’s record-setting pace. Reports indicate the overall crop quality is good as well. Final 2025 production figures will be available in just over a month, once Statistics Canada releases its crop production estimates on 2025-12-04.
Canadian Wheat Crop Quality (Data Updated to October 20, CGC)
Durum Wheat
- Protein: The 2025 crop has an average protein content of 14.7%, slightly below last year’s 15.3% (based on the December final report for all grades).
- Grade: In 2025, 48% of durum wheat samples graded #1 or #2 CWAD, compared to 73% last year. This year, 2% of the crop fell into the #3 category, versus 12.5% last year. Increased precipitation during harvest is a major factor, with issues such as severe sprouting, midge damage, mildew, Fusarium, and lower kernel weights pushing more samples into the #3 grade, while last year’s #3 durum was mostly attributed to weight alone.
Canadian Western Red Spring Wheat (CWRS)
- Protein: Average protein content for 2025 stands at 13.8%, down slightly from 14.1% last year (December final report, all grades).
- Grade: This year, 97% of CWRS samples have graded #1 or #2, an improvement from 94% last year. Minor downgrades below #2 are primarily due to fusarium and sprouting, but overall, the sampled CWRS wheat remains of good quality.
